OREGON ROCK ART 
GALLERY
This page contains links to photos of rock art in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and California. Both petroglyphs and pictographs exist at Oregon rock art sites. Usually one type predominates at any given site, although occasionally they are found together. Several of the links are to sites in Washington which, because it shares the Columbia River as a border, are relevant. At the bottom of the list are Great Basin and other tradition sites in Idaho, California and Nevada.
The photographs here were taken by D. Russel Micnhimer and LeeAnn Johnston unless other wise noted. Both digital and analogue photography were used. In some instances the images have been digitally manipulated so that the rock art may be more fully resolved.
The majority of the sites were visited by J. Malcolm and Louise Loring who assigned site numbers and names to them. These numbers have been used to organize the galleries. Multiple entries for a rock art site indicate multiple visits and frequently contain different photos of the petroglyphs and pictographs. Several sites that were not inventoried by the Lorings are also included. Additional links are supplied to galleries that may interest those interested in archaeology in Oregon.
Loring photographs are digital photos of black and white originals and may contain errors in site number labeling, flash glare and duplicates for which I apologize.
Since there are nearly 10,000 photographs in the galleries, the first link below is to a gallery of some of our favorite images, unsorted by site, that will give viewers an idea of the types of photographs that can be seen in the site galleries below. The rest of the galleries may be accessed by scrolling down. A helpful hint--if you are using a MS system and want to enlarge any web page view to take a closer look, hold down the control key and use the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in or out.
Our Favorite Oregon Rock Art Images
New 11/08 I have manipulated a number of our images into anaglyphs. To view these amazing 3-D images one needs a pair of red/green glasses, easily obtained on the web. It gives one the closest approximations I have been able to achieve so far to actually being at the site. Your feed back is appreciated. New 11/08 Photosynth is a Microsoft site (Sorry, doesn't currently work with MacOSs) that allows one to view a collection of photos in a very interactive three dimensional manner. I find it works really well for viewing images that are in areas, such as caves, that restrict the ability to photograph the entire panel or site from one angle. Samples of this are in the following links. Can be a bit slow to load but worth the wait.
